How to Get Started Writing on Medium
From someone writing since last November
Hey,
This is going to be a long one, so yeah. I’m going to tell you how you can get started writing on Medium.
My last couple of emails have all been about how to grow on Medium, but none have told you a step-by-step guide to actually starting it.
And, please, start writing on Medium - it’s the best business idea out there. You could earn a few hundred a month just on the side.
So, what I want you to do for now is to open a website called ‘Medium’, and create an account. Chances are, you’ve seen this website while typing up random ass questions.
So, after you’re in the home screen, click on the search bar, and type in ‘ILLUMINATION.’
Right underneath the ‘Publications’ tab, click on the very top one that says ILLUMINATION.
After you’ve clicked on it, you’ll go to the publication. Now is the part where you’ll have to wait.
Click follow in the right, and then click on ‘Inquiries.’
It will take you to a form where you can apply to write for the publications. Now that I’ve told you how to apply to a publication, let me talk about what publications are.
When you publish a story on Medium, the story gets pushed out to your followers, which you have 0 when starting.
But stories published in publications get sent to your followers AND the followers of the publication.
And a few publications have over 20,000 followers. Now, your first article isn’t going to get popular.
But your hundredth one probably will. When you’re starting out, you’re not going to be earning much. You might earn $45 a month.
But when you have an audience and you build something like a course, they’re going to buy it since they already like, know, and trust you as a person.
While Medium isn’t the most sustainable way to earn money as a writer, it helps you build an audience. The best part?
Some writers who have only been writing for 2 years have gotten 200,000 followers. You could give them some value and then end up telling them to buy something.
The Next Steps:
Go to a platform called Substack. It’s a bit different to Medium. On Medium, when a paying Medium member purchases a membership, they get access to everything.
The worst part? They share their profits with you, which means you’ll be getting pennies.
However, on Substack, the reader pays the writer directly and only gets the content from the writer. Not the entirety of Substack.
This means you could have a sustainable recurring income. Also, on Medium, in order to get payouts, you’ll need to become a Medium member,
But Substack has no upfront costs. Substack only takes 10% of your profits. They only make money when you do.
And yeah.
Research these platforms, come back, and tell me how it went. If you want any more clarification on something, reply with ‘MEDIUM’ and I’ll send you it.
